For those who are interested in cosmetic procedures to improve the look of their smile, the ADA lists several safe procedures. For example, tooth whitening, enamel shaping and bonding for chipped or broken teeth are common ways that people can enhance the appearance of their teeth.

The ADA listed procedures that are safe when performed by a dentist. There are some radical procedures that we and the ADA would not recommend. Below are a few examples of dental procedures that can be harmful.

  • First, on an episode of America’s Next Top Model, a young girl wanted to have the spaces between her teeth widened which caused problems with the jaw. Jaw problems do not out-weight the benefit of the desired appearance.
  • Next, due to some pop culture phenomenon, some people have been getting their teeth reshaped to appear more like fangs, which can be dangerous and costly, we do not recommend this procedure.
  • Finally, while very expensive and not a typical procedure, some celebrities have had diamonds added to their teeth. Along with being incredibly expensive, the diamonds can wear away at tooth enamel, especially if food gets stuck on to them.
