Here at Summit Smiles Dental, we often encounter patients dealing with the frustrations of damaged or infected teeth. One such case recently illustrated the importance of dental implants in restoring function, comfort and confidence. I’d like to share the story of a patient who underwent a single-tooth implant to regain the use of her lower molar after dealing with years of dental issues.
The Case: An Infected Tooth with a History
The patient had previously undergone a root canal on her lower molar, followed by a crown placement. Over time, despite good treatment and care, the tooth became infected again. Unfortunately, the infection reached a point where there was no longer an option to salvage the tooth with another filling or root canal. It’s something that can happen over time, despite the best efforts in treatment.
When she came into the office, she was understandably upset and in pain. The loss of a molar significantly impacts chewing function, and her discomfort was apparent. After explaining the available options, we recommended a single-tooth implant as the best solution for long-term stability and full function.
The Implant Process
The first step was to remove the infected tooth. Once the tooth was removed, we immediately placed a permanent implant, anchoring it into the bone. This implant would serve as the foundation for her new tooth. We then allowed the implant to heal in her bone, which typically takes three to four months. During this healing period, the implant integrates with the bone in a process called osseointegration, which provides the necessary stability for the future crown.
Creating and Placing the Crown
Once the implant had healed and was securely integrated into the bone, it was time to restore it with a crown. Using modern digital technology, we performed a simple digital scan of the implant site. This scan allowed our dental lab to create a custom crown that would match her existing teeth in color, shape and size.
When the crown was ready, she returned to the office, and we performed a quick, straightforward procedure. We unscrewed the healing cap from the implant and placed the crown on top, securing it in place. The result was a new, functional tooth that fit seamlessly with the rest of her smile.
A Happy Outcome
The patient was thrilled with her new tooth. She was particularly pleased with how natural it felt and looked. The color and shape blended perfectly with her other teeth, and she quickly regained full functionality in terms of chewing and speaking. Her pain was gone, and she was delighted to have a beautiful, functional tooth.
The Satisfying Experience of Restoration
As a dentist, it’s incredibly satisfying to see transformations like this one. Patients often come in feeling upset and in pain, worried about the state of their oral health. But after going through the implant process and receiving their final crown, they leave happy, relieved and confident.
Restoring a tooth isn’t just about fixing a problem; rather, it’s about helping people regain their quality of life. Whether it’s eating comfortably again or simply being able to smile without hesitation, the impact of a successful dental implant is profound. I’m grateful to be part of these transformations and to witness the joy and relief that comes when patients see their new, restored smile.
